The 2018 Modern Times Festival of Dankness is the first out of state festival we have attended and we are sure glad we did! There were some logistics we had to get through; liquor licensing & distribution to name a few. We made it a priority because we could not pass up the opportunity to be amongst 50 of the best breweries in the world and showcase our dankest, hop-forward beers to a passionate crowd of beer lovers from across the country!
Many kudos have to go out to the folks at Modern Times for not making the weekend just about pouring beer at the festival itself but providing educational opportunities for all the breweries in attendance. On the Friday before the festival, we were given the opportunity to attend a tour of both the Modern Times coffee roasting program and their brewery's lab. This was followed by a handful of educational seminars with topics ranging from "Hop Creep" to "The Current State of IPAs." The legitimacy of "Hazy" IPAs in the industry and the up-and-coming "Brut" IPA style took up a large portion of the discussion.
What is "Hop Creep" you may ask? - "Hop Creep" is the process by which beer may become over-attenuated, over-carbonated or produce the unwanted diacetyl off-flavor due to enzymes present in hop matter that actually break down dextrins into fermentable sugars, which are then re-fermented by the yeast that remains in the beer. The day was capped off with a Happy Hour at the beautiful North Park Beer Co. where we were able to mingle and get everyone's perspective on the current state of beer in their region.
We were super excited to be able to bring four different styles to The Festival of Dankness! Our beer line-up consisted of:
- "Sonic" - IPA brewed with flaked barley and unmalted wheat. Hopped 100% with Citra. Guaranteed to be a High-Fidelity Experience!
- "Harvest" - Prickly Pear Pale Ale brewed with oats. Dry-hopped with Simcoe, Mosaic, and a particularly nice batch of El Dorado. Locally foraged prickly pear juice added post fermentation lent a beautiful pink hue and watermelon aroma.
- "Fields" - IPA brewed with flaked oats and a touch of rye. Dry-hopped exclusively with Mosaic.
- "Wunder" - IPA brewed with all German malts and hopped with Grungeist, Hüll Melon & Mandarina Bavaria hops! A hazy IPA, that stays true to the Reinheitsgebot!
*All of these cans are available to purchase in our taproom, just in case you were wondering.
We certainly hope that our first year at The Festival of Dankness will not be our last! We had so much fun making new friends from all corners of the country and trying a wide variety of their hop-forward beers. We can't wait to see where the beer industry goes in the next few years.
The fun did not stop for us after The Festival of Dankness in San Diego! Stay tuned for Part Two of our adventures on the West Coast...
